In pursuit of sustainable fisheries management, the National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC) convened for its 2nd quarter meeting earlier today, on June 20, 2023, at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City.
Leading the meeting on the discussion and approval of the proposed Fisheries Administrative Orders (FAOs) were DA Undersecretary Drusila Esther Bayate, the chair of NFARMC, and Mr. Peter Paul Santos of Large Scale Commercial Fisheries.
Officials from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) headed by national director Atty. Demosthenes Escoto participated in the event. Representatives from other agencies, members of the academe, and non-governmental organizations also joined the meeting.
With the successful conclusion of the meeting, the council members of NFARMC and BFAR have taken a significant stride in fulfilling their commitment to sustainable fisheries management in the country through the implementation of rules and regulations aimed at safeguarding and conserving fishery resources.
NFARMC serves as the advisory and recommending body responsible for policy-making to the Department of Agriculture. Its purpose is to assist in formulating national policies for the protection, sustainable development, and management of fishery and aquatic resources, as well as in preparing the National Fisheries and Industry Development Plan.
